Experiencing The Very Real But Mysterious Chronic Daily Headache

by Jack Hanley on December 13, 2009

There is an exhaustive feeling when you have a chronic daily headache. It is a terrible feeling to know that your performance at work, your home life, and even your sleep is going to be affected by this headache every day. The worst part is, it usually takes a little convincing to get the people around you to understand that this is real and really do have a chronic daily headache.

Nearly 5 percent of the world’s adults suffer from this unusual phenomenon. Mild cases can be an annoyance and are often not evaluated by a physician. However, the more severe cases can be life altering, debilitating, and cause significant complications in one’s work or home life. These headaches almost always require long term management after aggressive treatment is administered.

Chronic migraines are considered to be the worst of the offenders. When it comes down to debilitation, these headaches are at the top of the list. They usually spring from a sudden onset migraine and seem to be impossible to control over a great period of time. It’s not that you have to have the migraine every single day, but if you have the migraine more often than you are pain free, this might be the problem.

Of course, not all chronic daily headaches are migraines. While the chronic tension headaches can feel very much like a pounding migraine, it’s actually not. It does leave you with more daily function, albeit not pleasant functioning. These are generally headaches that will come back again and again if they are not properly managed by a physician.

If you have a daily headache that never allows you a moment of pain free living and it seems stuck on one side of your head, you may have what is known as hemicrania continua. Congestion or an affected eye on the painful side will be present in some form. These require treatment as soon as possible. The consistent pain can be maddening, literally.

While it is true that sometimes an infection or an injury to the brain can cause these symptoms, there is a more common explanation. When blood vessels that surround the brain are inflamed you get a headache. In some cases, the inflammation returns daily with a trigger, needs more direct treatment to relieve the inflammation, or is blood vessel related in a different way.

Sometimes you can be helping these headaches return without knowing it. Rebound headaches are intense headaches that return again and again because you’re taking medication for the headache. Taking too much medication or taking it too often can be the triggers for rebound headaches.

There are times that there is no concrete explanation for the chronic daily headache. It doesn’t make it any less real. Sometimes physicians just can’t find the actual cause. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t a cause. If you have pain and your physician does not treat you once finding no cause, you might consider a specialist in the field.
