How To Decide On Your Next Outdoor Wooden Shed

by Chris Channing on June 19, 2010

The smart consumer will take the time to research wooden sheds before buying them. It’s much more than just looking at the price tag and making the purchase- it’s all about what you need it to do, how you plan on maintaining it, and of course how you plan on installing it. Each point is valid in making the final purchase.

You should already know what you want to use your shed for- this is a key factor in picking the type of shed from a retail store. There are many types of pre-built models to choose from that solve different problems. If you just need the average storage shed for lawn care equipment products, you can get by with something small and not insulated- and also inexpensive.

Wood comes in many colors, sizes, weight, and shapes. The wood you pick will give the shed its properties of style, durability, and resistance to the elements. Cheap synthetic wood is good for a simple storage shed. If you want something more long-term and durable, look for a real, wooden, shed made from a solid wood such as oak. Cedar is another favorite because of the low cost.

A pre-made shed is likely to have a window or two to help sell it to the general public. If you aren’t interested in spending more money for a window option, plenty of Internet retailers stock sheds without them. Windows do serve as a threat to the security of the belongings inside, so they are better suited for a playhouse. If needed, you can also create a security system around the perimeter.

Some say that wood is a poor material for sheds that house flammable liquids. This is true in some cases, but there are methods in which you can fire proof your shed. One way would be to apply a special coat of primer that is resistant to fire. Another way would be to observe proper fire safety tactics. Others are concerned that wood can rot- but again, a little bit of primer every year or so will do wonders in protecting your investment.

Just as much as you are planning your new shed, plan the area around it. Some shed types will demand that you create a minimal foundation or trench for support. Even if the model doesn’t demand such a task, consider planting flowers or shrubs in advance so you will also have a shed that looks just as good as it is useful.

Final Thoughts

If you don’t have the time to build your own shed, look on the Internet for solutions that can be constructed within just a couple of hours. The items ship right to your door, and the prices are great compared to the high markup that is apparent with most local shed retailers. Above all else, enjoy your new shed and shed accessories!
