Can Parents Minimize The Risk Of Childhood Obesity?

by Maiko Hirose on July 6, 2010

In response to increased government awareness of childhood obesity, UK schools plan on implementing a program to measure the height and weight all primary age school children between the ages of 4-5, and repeating the process again when the children leave for secondary education at ages 10-11. This type of program is presently done in the United States, but does it work?

There have been disputes saying that kids will end up being marked out and be bullied more as a result, thus resulting in a higher number of kids who deal with eating disorders in the future. A lot of people also believe that a parent has the responsibility to inform their child if they have a weight problem and get the money together to help change that if necessary.

What could a parent do to help their kids maintain a healthy weight?

Parents need to learn how to constructively help their children to overcome the bullying or teasing that they experience at school, by providing them with a positive, supportive experience at home, which will in turn help to protect their child from feeling as if they are a failure or from becoming isolated.

Instead, parents could set a good example by cooking healthy meals, and refrain from indulging in junk food themselves. Although it is important to allow the occasional treat, as being too strict will only cause problems. If the entire family works together to improve everyone’s eating habits, then children won’t feel singled out and picked on.

Avoiding concentrating on food is another crucial step to success. Even while this is a vital aspect of our daily lives and cannot be eluded, it would be wise to leave this out of the main conversations at home with the family. If a kid is persistently hearing about their own weight and the effects of overeating, that individual may acquire a negative outlook on food.

That is why it is important to concentrate on other matters, especially those aspects of life that are least stressful and offer fun and positive ways for a child to spend their time.
